Description

Wuzhen Suyi Buer Tie-dye: The Revival of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Indigo-Colored Water Towns Next to the bluestone slabs of the old street in Nanzha, Wuzhen, the "Suyi Buer" Tie-dye Experience Hall hides the vibrant code of Jiangnan's intangible cultural heritage. This workshop, founded by Shan Jiahuan, a craftsman in her 90s, continues the old craftsmanship passed down by her grandmother and mother, innovatively integrating traditional tie-dye with glaze techniques, allowing the millennium-old "China Blue" to be reborn in the misty water vapor of Wuzhen. From grass and wood extraction to blossoming fingertips, each piece here carries the craftsman's original intention, and each experience hides a surprise dialogue with the water town. The name "Suyi Buer" contains a dual commitment: "Su" is the original white cloth, and "Yibuer" is the pursuit of craftsmanship. The workshop's technical foundation comes from Shan Jiahuan's grandmother, a folk artist who has been deeply involved in tie-dye for decades. Those old account books that record bundling techniques and dye ratios are still the workshop's "family heirloom." Instead of sticking to the traditional model, they combine their grandmother's tie-dye and mother's batik techniques with modern aesthetics, launching trendy products such as hair accessories, dolls, and tie-dye bouquets, and innovatively adding glaze techniques to allow the indigo background to bloom with agile brilliance. Today, it is not only a popular check-in point for Wuzhen's intangible cultural heritage experience, but also attracts tourists from countries such as Ukraine, Iceland, and Malaysia to explore through social media, allowing the water town tie-dye to go to the world. "Every tie-dye work has its own temper, just like every water town story has its own unique charm." Here, you will not only gain a hand-made piece, but also an in-depth dialogue with the millennium-old intangible cultural heritage and the Jiangnan water town.
