Puro Mangkunegaran, this palace was known as a puri or pura (pronounced "puro" in Javanese) and not a "Kraton" because politically it was not the house of the ruler, but was an independent duchy or district. Therefore the Mangkunegaran Temple has slightly different characteristics compared to other Javanese palaces. Mangkunegaran, is especially distinguished by the absence of a square with a pair of classical banyan trees as is usually found in the main cities of Java.
