Кодокан — бывшая клановая школа, учреждённая девятым правителем Мито, Токугавой Нариаки. В своё время это было самое большое учебное заведение подобного рода в стране: сыновья самураев осваивали здесь конфуцианство, медицину, фехтование и верховую езду — словом, всё, что требовалось и от образованного чиновника, и от воина. На территории сохранились главные ворота, главный зал и Зал Сидзэн-до — все три постройки имеют статус Important Cultural Properties (важных памятников культуры).
