Description

Magome-juku, Tsumago-juku, Ena Gorge Observation Deck, and Inuyama Castle are all very distinctive attractions in the Chubu region of Japan. With a rich historical and cultural heritage and well-preserved traditional landscapes, this is a day trip for an in-depth experience of Japanese culture. The first stop is Inuyama Castle. Inuyama Castle is the oldest existing castle tower in Japan, designated as a national treasure of Japanese architecture, and is known as one of the "Four National Treasure Castles of Japan" along with Himeji Castle, Matsumoto Castle, and Hikone Castle. Visitors can climb to the top of the castle tower and enjoy panoramic views of the Kiso River and the castle town from the observation deck, experiencing the atmosphere of the Warring States period. Sanko Inari Shrine is famous for its rows of red torii gates, known for bringing good relationships and improving love fortunes. Its guardian deity is an Inari fox, and there are many heart-shaped ema (votive tablets) within its grounds. Ena Gorge Observation Deck Ena Gorge is a columnar jointed gorge formed by the Kiso River cutting through volcanic lava. Here, there are unique rock formations such as the Umbrella Rock, a national natural monument, and red rocks covered with reddish-brown moss. Climbing to the "Ena Gorge Bridge Observation Deck" offers stunning views of "Byobu Rock" and "Gunkan Rock" reflected in the lake, with the magnificent natural scenery being refreshing. In the afternoon, head to Magome-juku. Magome-juku was an essential route for merchants traveling between ancient Kyoto and Tokyo, the 43rd post town on the Nakasendo road, named for its resemblance to a "basket on a horse's back." Visitors can stroll along the undulating stone paths, passing through old townhouses, waterwheels, and unique shops, experiencing the authentic Edo period atmosphere. Tsumago-juku Tsumago-juku is said to be the place where brides in ancient mountain villages waited for their grooms. It is Japan's first "Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings," appearing more rustic and tranquil than Magome-juku. Wandering through it, one can feel the leisurely pace of travelers resting in days gone by. Warm reminder: Inuyama Castle is an ancient building with relatively steep stairs. It may be challenging for the elderly or those with mobility issues to climb, so it is highly recommended to have someone accompany them. You can also choose a package that does not include admission tickets and only view the exterior. Tsumago-juku has many steps, so it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and clothes and to pace yourself during the trip.
